Mari Star creates functional stoneware pottery in her home studio in Rockford, Michigan. She has studied with Judy Nyerges-Beaudoin of Rockford, Mary Dozema, Rita Shields, and Sara Hubbard at the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. Mari’s work can be found at various art shows throughout the region. She currently teaches pottery in the adult community education classes in Rockford and has taught at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts in Grand Rapids. She is an active member of the West Michigan Potter’s Guild. “After admiring and collecting pottery for many years, I finally made time in my life to learn more about the art. Why did I wait so long! It is my goal to continue to learn more about ceramic arts and produce functional, yet artful pieces. I enjoy the inherent beauty of “rugged” stoneware pottery and the natural colors the high fire kiln produces from my hand mixed glazes. Every time I open the kiln, it is somewhat like Christmas, as you do not know what surprises await! There are so many variables in the forming, glazing and firing process that make each piece unique. My stoneware is not production pottery. Each piece is one-of-a-kind designed with a purpose . It is my hope that each piece will be used to bring harmony to a table setting or enhance the home décor. The stoneware is food-safe and dishwasher/microwave safe. Please use and enjoy!”
